Customer Reviews:
5 out of 5 stars excellent machine   February 20, 2009

I have had this Planer for well over a year now and frankly I don't see what more you could look for in a planer. The unit produces a perfect finish. I especially like the cast iron table. My previous unit, a Powermatic, had rollers and they are dangerous as your fingers could get caught in the rollers as the wood exits. I think it is a little on the noise side, but they all are and you need good ear protection. One definite requirement is a good dust collection system. Overall, i would highly recommend it. I did not buy my unit through Amazon. I purchased it through Brians Tool in Enfield, CT.
Note: One important thing i did want to mention. If you have any questions call shop fox. They have one of best customer service departments I have ever spoken with. They will spend the necessary time to answer any questions you have.

5 out of 5 stars Shop Fox 15" Planer   July 2, 2010

I waited a year before I would comment on this machine. This makes my third and final planer. This is one excellent machine. I have ran mostly hard wood thru this machine. It has a two speed gear box on it. You get your board all most ready then you shift it into low gear and a couple of light passes thru, and the board is almost ready to stain. That is how smooth it gets it. My other two planers are not even close to this one. Yes it is a little loud, but most of them are. The thing weighs almost 600 lbs. With the cast iron rollers it moves like it weighed hardly anything. I have yet had to sharpen the blades on it. like I said above I run mostly hard wood thru it. I would say I have run almost 1500 board feet thru it with no problems at all. The only thing that I wish it would of come with is a helical head on it. That way when I do have to sharpen the blades I wouldn't have to mess setting them. All in all this is one great machine, and you will not be disappointed you bought one.

5 out of 5 stars great stationary planer   July 12, 2010

The price was so good I was a little skeptical. I did as much research on the internet as I could and I felt fairly safe in ordering the product. Next, I was concerned on how I could get the 700lb machine into my workshop in my basement because you would have to traverse approximately 25 feet of grass to get to the workshop door. I called the carrier and they said Amazon was shipping it door to door and the delivery person(s) would deliver it into my basement but they would not assemble it. I thought this was too good to be true. However, the delivery people did just what they said they would do. They laid down plywood over the grass so the dolly could go over the grass and they put the machine inside of my shop and took it out of the crate so it could be inspected. Then they positioned it exactly where I wanted it (it was great that they did this but once you put on the front wheel, it is a piece of cake to move it by yourself.) I had a couple of questions on setup so I called Shopfox. The Shopfox people were more than helpful and it took only about 5 minutes to get a tech on the phone. I took extra time to set it up as close to perfect (as to roller tolerances) and I leveled the extension tables. You have to supply your own 220 plug. Now to test the machine. It was perfect. I mean perfect. I ran red oak through the machine and it planed the pieces to exactly the same 1/128 thickness measurement. For example, after planing, if one side of one end measured 101/128, the other side of the same end measured 101/128 and the other other end of the board and all the way down the board measured 101/128 (measured with a digital caliper). On top of all of that, the depth scale as set by the factory was spot on - you set it at 3/4 of an inch and that is what you get. I run 12 inch wide red oak through the machine and it doesn't slow down at all. I couldn't be more pleased with the machine and delivery service. This is my first piece of Shopfox machinery but it will not be my last.

4 out of 5 stars W1742 gets the job done and outstanding service   April 21, 2008

I purchased this planer a few months back and was really pleased with it. This is my first big planer and had to buy this one after much analysis of it's competitors comparable models. I say comparable, but in reality, they don't even come close to the shear numbers of options that this planer has and others don't. Some of the things that tipped the scales for me was the weight of this unit. 590 lbs once you get all the shipping stuff off of it. Head is fixed so there are no head to table tolerances to deal with. Everything on this thing is adjustable. Everything.

The first unit I purchased had something wrong with it. As you planed wood down to 3/4" it started to have alignment issues with the table to the head and effectively it created wedge shaped boards. The process of debugging it and determining that the unit was faulty was a simple ordeal and a new unit was promptly given to me.

No other problems.
